…..so i was in Indiana (still a junior in college) and Jon was on the east coast working and going to school and we charged ahead with a long distance relationship that continued through my final year of college (and student teaching…..dun, dun, dun…).

there were many nights of phone calls,

internet chats (this was before Skype—but man, that would’ve made things so much easier!),

love letters (the old fashion kind),

and frequent flights to see each other every couple of months  (remember Independence Air?  it was running for almost exactly the amount of time of our long distance relationship—so amazing and SOOOO cheap!).

our first trip together was a visit to see Jon’s sister in Nashville and we had such an incredible time.  what i most remember about that trip is candy buttons, Pete Yorn, and a torrential downpour.

every time we were together it was like a vacation, because one or both of us were somewhere other than “home” and when you don’t see someone for 2 months, the time you are together is even better.

because of our lala, dream-like, mushy gushy relationship up to that point, we both decided that it would probably be a good idea to live near each other for awhile to see if we still felt the same way when we saw each on a regular, everyday-style basis.

indiana wasn’t exactly hiring tons of teachers at the time, and when i attended a hiring fair in Jon’s hometown, i got hired on the spot.  we both felt like this was God’s hand in leading me to live across the country—away from my family and friends—but nearer to him.

so i moved that summer, started my job teaching fourth graders and had a whirlwind of year.  i’m not going to lie,  it really wasn’t easy moving away from my close knit family, or my bff, but jon and i realized we really did get along so well, have similar future goals, and love the Lord.  he also has a great family that welcomed me and made the transition much easier…..

next week….the proposal :) .
