Hi friends of The Hollie Rogue! Stephanie here from Behind the Camera and Dreaming. I’m so happy to be here again with you on Photo Friday!  Today, I’m going to share a little bit about how to get a great landscape shot wherever you are and how to make it pop!
First, let’s address how to get a great landscape shot straight out of the camera.
.
Be Observant.
The first key to getting a great landscape shot is to observe your surroundings. You don’t have to go to fabulous locations to get great shots of mother earth just as she is. That’s what landscape photography is about – to me anyway- capturing the beauty of God’s creation just as I am taking it in. It’s those moments of “wow THIS much be God’s work” that I always want to capture. The photo above is just at a campsite looking into the woods in southern Missouri -beauty is everywhere. For almost four years I drove an hour through the Mississippi River Delta in from Memphis into Arkansas and every day there was something I wanted to stop and photograph. In the fall the sunsets were breathtaking!
.

Work Your Settings.

If your focal point is a beautiful sky – you want your Aperture to be on the small side. Probably 5.0 or smaller (meaning a higher number on your camera). In the first picture I probably used a high aperture and a fairly fast shutter speed. I could have slowed down my shutter speed  IF I was using a tripod or resting my camera on a solid surface.  A slower shutter speed would have allowed for more light and possibly more details to show up. In the second photo I exposed it a little creatively which made my sky blown out, but I still love it and the hazy quality. This was using a larger aperture (probably around 2.8).

Point of View.

Don’t be afraid to lay down in the dirt. Try different things because later you will wish you would have!

Layers.

To add some contrast and enhance your photo. Here are a few simple steps:

Select Background layer – Right Click (or go to Layers) – Duplicate Layer – Change your blending mode.

I chose soft light for the photo below and lowered the opacity. This brightened my colors. You can also mask off part of the image to take away the effect.

Actions.
You can also use certain actions or presets that will bring out the color in your photo. It’s super easy and you can always adjust the opacity of each layer within the action to get a result you love!  Some great simple to use FREE Actions can be found on from The Pioneer Woman – below I used Fresh and Colorful.

Here I used Fresh and Colorful along with Lovely and Ethereal -adjusted to taste.

I hope you can use these few tips and get some great shots. I’d love to see them! Come by and visit me over at Behind the Camera and Dreaming  and as always let me know if you have any questions or tips to share with me!
